Moonstone and pearls
by Maura Nicholson on Apr.14, 2010, under Handmade Jewelry
This necklace has three of my favorite stones but I do have a lot of favorite stones! back to this necklace, first up is moonstone , a tumble polished pebble a lovely creamy colour with a patch of snowy white set in silver. Second are pearls, this necklace has grey stick pearls with peacock colours . Then last but not least labradorite chip beads, a pale grey with hints of blue. All this stones together make a rather delicious necklace!
Creating a Theme: A fun way to use shark teeth!
by geisha on Apr.13, 2010, under Handmade Jewelry, Jewelry Making
About six months ago a co-worker aware of my jewelry obsession brought me some shark teeth. He thought perhaps I could use them in my jewelry. Weeks and months went by and I just wasn’t quite ready to tackle those shark teeth. After a while, that little bag of shark teeth seemed to be taunting me while I was making jewelry. I just didn’t know where to begin.
The other night I decided it was time to attempt to create with the shark teeth. First I had to figure out how I was going to string these shark teeth, after all they didn’t have any holes. I knew I was going to have to wire-wrap them. I first tried with a wire that was too thick, I think 20 gauge. The wire just wouldn’t stay put! Then I switched to a thinner wire and it worked much better. I wrapped them until they were very secure and made a bail out of wire so I could attach them a chain.
Now that the hardest part was over, I had to decide what to pair these shark teeth with. I first was drawn to turquoise, to create an overall earthy look. Then it dawned on me. Under the Sea! I had a baggie full of sea glass that I have accumulated over time, some really pretty keshi pearls and and shell beads to hang everthing from. In all, I really like these earrings and think that somehow they actually look quite feminine even with the shark teeth.
The jagged shark tooth is balanced by the smooth sea glass. The matte finish glass is balanced by the shiny surface of the pearl. And the masculine qualities of the shark tooth are balanced by the feminine qualities of the keshi pearl. Harmony.

Black lipped pearl ring
by Maura Nicholson on Apr.12, 2010, under Handmade Jewelry
Black lipped pearl sounds so dark, mysterious and sexy, well I think so! This ring is made from 9ct gold wire and has a black lipped pearl stone. It is one of my more delicate and small rings but is still very striking.
Pearl, pearls and more pearls!
by francine on Apr.09, 2010, under Handmade Jewelry
If you are like me, you have pearls all over the place, including the floor. As you know, pearls come in many different sizes and shapes. They are all beautiful and add that something special to a piece of jewelry.
I recently collected up all of my stray pearls from the floor of my studio and decided to create something with them.
Since I did not have enough for an entire necklace and there were too many different sizes to create a bracelet where they were simply string on beading wire, I decided to drill larger holes in them and knot them on linen.
While drilling pearls is not overly difficult, it is very dusty project and you MUST wear a mask to avoid breathing in all of that dust.
After the pearls were drilled, they were strung and knotted on black linen. The clasp is actually a button and works quite well on this piece as it breaks up the color and adds some shine.
This project will work with any color or shapes of pearls. So check out your stash of loose pearls and let’s see what you come up with!
