Creating Focal Components using Polymer Clay for Impulse Bead Buys

by Laura Rockefeller on Nov.05, 2009, under Handmade Jewelry, Jewelry Making

You know you’ve done it. You saw a strand of beads, or two or six, and you just had to have them. I’m certainly guilty of impulse buys of this kind, only to get home and discover I have no focal bead to go with them. So I trot back out to the local bead shop where none of the focals seem quite right. So what to do?

You don’t want to let your beautiful new beads collect dust in one of your many bead storage containers. That’s a fate no bead should ever have to face, especially not those pretties you just brought home!

Enter polymer clay. With your beads handy, you can blend polymer clay colors to craft a perfect match or complement to your new beads. And with a myriad of techniques, there’s a style for every necklace. The focal points for the necklaces above were made out of polymer clay specifically to match beads in my inventory.

Turquoise and Quartz Necklace featuring Handmade Polymer Clay Beads

The green necklace has a round focal made from a jelly role cane to match kelly green round quartz beads. I’ve also created round beads to balance out the chuunkiness of the turquoise nuggets.

Two-strand Majorelle Blue Necklace featuring Handmade Polymer Focal Bead

The blue necklace has a trapezoidal focal bead made of of clay using a marbleizing technique. They match perfectly with the sapphire ceramic discs I just had to have. With polymer clay, you’ll always have beads to match those darling impulse buys!

Crystal wand, turquoise and crystal bracelet

I have used a crystal wand and set it in silver, it has two strands of crystal and turquoise beads with gold plated wire. I had set lots of crystal wands and odd stones I had ‘laying around’ anddecided to make them all up into necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

It was great fun but now I am back to finishing my new collection which  I should have finished a month ago!!. To buy this piece check my website.

A Passion for Jewelry. A Passion for Life.

by jessejamesbeads on Nov.04, 2009, under Jewelry Trends

Why do we create jewelry? And why do we wear it? Do we create something just because it’s pretty? Sometimes…

But the pieces that really hit home and have some drive to them are the ones that are created out of passion. Passion that embodies a necklace or a pair of earrings and let’s the wearer feel like she stands for something when she puts it on (or he, of course!)

Bracelet

The photo shown above is of my new Phillies bracelet that I made during Game 1 of the World Series 2009. I’ve worn it everyday since the start of the Series, it embodies my belief in my team. The Phils are down in the count but boy are they staying alive. I love and have a whole-hearted belief in my team and that is why I wear my bracelet.

What do you wear that strikes your passion? What have you created that has embodied passion for another? As jewelry creators, we have the power to influence our customers, our friends, our families…our jewelry WEARERS’ lives! Tons of people wear jewelry to feel a connection to something. What connection will you bring to the piece you make today?

Passion…Pass it On.

And Go Phils! You can do it boys!

Peace, Love n Beads.
