With the last post of Gemstone Each Month Series (GEMS) – May, we would writing on how to care for Emerald Jewelry and Gemstone. Do use these tips in general too, to keep your jewelry last long. Also showcasing a very beautiful Emerald Brooch kept at Museum of Natural History, Washington.

Continuing with Emerald Jewelry care tips, here we go :-

• Emeralds are generally found without fissures and surface cracks, so it’s common for them to have been oiled, waxed or filled with resin.
• Though they have a good hardness, but due to inclusions and fissures they can easily break or chip on impact. So you should wear the emerald jewelry carefully. Also you can keep emerald in your jewelry surrounded with harder gemstones like diamond to avoid direct impact.
• Every 2-3 years, you can give it to an experienced jeweler to re-oil your emerald, which would keep make it look good longer.
• Clean emerald jewelry with a soft, dry cloth only. Avoid exposing emerald to harsh chemicals.
• Store your Emerald Jewelry in a dry place, preferably away from sunlight. Also don’t store them in the same compartments of bags as diamonds and sapphires to prevent scratches to the emeralds.

This announcement comes today from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). More than 200 career opportunities in the jewelry industry will be available at the GIA Mini Jewelry Career Fair in Las Vegas on Sunday, June 6. This job fair is free and open to the public.

It offers access to more than 20 ompanies, 18 career coaches and a powerhouse speaker panel. Companies such as Montblanc, Stuller, Inc., and Firestone Inc., will be on-site to conduct interviews for positions including; diamond and colored stone buyers, designers, watch specialists, marketing executives, gemologists, jewelers and more. Career opportunities are available in cities from around the globe: New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Seattle, Montreal, Dubai, Ramat Gan, Hong Kong and more.

The GIA Mini Jewelry Career Fair will be held on Sunday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. for career coaching sign-ups. Recruiting and career coaching will begin at 11:30 a.m. and run until 1:30 p.m. It will take place on the 4th floor of the Venetian Conference Center in the Zeno ballrooms.

• The name according to Indian mythology was orignated from Sanskrit as “marakata”, meaning green. One other believed source of this name was Herbrew, orignating from the word izmargad – again meaning “green”. It is also believed to be orignated in Greek, derived from  Latin word “smaragdus”.
• Records show that Emerald was traded in Babylon as early as 4000 BC. Emeralds were prized by ancient Egyptian pharaohs and by the Aztec rulers in South America, who considered the green gem a holy stone. It was known that Emerald was a favorite gem of Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, and the Emerald mine in Upper Egypt, rediscovered a hundred years ago near the Red Sea, was one of the earliest Emerald occurrences in the human history
• In India, ancient scriptures speak of the emerald. More recently Shah Jahan loved Emeralds so much that he had sacred texts inscribed into them and used these gemstones as talismans.
• Russian crown jewels were also adorned by Emeralds. The Iranian crown jewels have a wide collection of Emerald Jewels, including the very famous, Emerald tiara of ex-Empress Farah.

Emeralds are generally classified by the place they come from, so we would discuss about the types and mines of Emerald together.

• Zambian Emerald – although discovered in the late 40′s was not commercially mined until the 1950′s. Zambia, today is one of the worlds’s leading producers of fine Emerald. Its known for its intense color, remarkable clarity and retains its magnificent hue even in small stones of less than 0.5 ct. This makes it most highly prized variety of Emerald.
• Columbian Emerald – Columbia is the biggest producer of emeralds these days, both in terms of quantity and quality. These are mainly sought after for the large crystals and therefore bigger stones.
• Sandwana Emerald – Coming from Zimbabwe, they have stunning color and are known for the inclusions inside. They look very similar to Zambian Emerald.
• Brazilian Emerald – Brazil has been supplying emerald to the world market since the 1980s. Brazilian emeralds are generally lighter and yellowish in shade.

Emeralds are found in many other countries too – including Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania and United States.

Syenthetic Emerald - The first commercially successful emerald synthesis process was that of Carroll Chatham. However the process did not run out to be commercially much viable. Another process known as hydrothermal flux process by Pierre Gilson Sr., began to be used in the production of synthetic emerald since 1964.
